Project Brief
The overall goals of the renovations to Heberlig-Palmer Park were to (a) improve recreational opportunities for the residents in the local neighborhood, (b) increase general use and facilitate observation with neighbors and law enforcement personnel in order to reduce undesirable activity, (c) highlight the existing landscape for play areas, and (d) demonstrate possibilities for small-scale production of fresh fruits and vegetables in an urban setting. Driven by dedicated community leaders from the West Side Neighbors Group, and financially supported by PA DCNR and a Hud's Community Block Grant program, this project focused on revitalizing the park as well as bringing additional benefits to the immediate community. The design plan includes a walking path, natural playscapes, retaining and seating wall, edible landscaping and community garden.
